The oat grain

oatfield 900x674

The anatomy of the oat grain.

The most interesting parts of the oat grain include:

  • Husk or hull – inedible, and makes up about 25% of the oat grain. It's removed (dehusked or dehulled) before the grain is processed.
  • Bran – a rich source of soluble and insoluble fibre.
  • Endosperm – rich in complex, starchy carbohydrates.
  • Germ – where the fat (largely unsaturated fat), vitamins and minerals are stored.
