Coffee Chaos

If you have a fondness for all things chocolatey – like chocolate sauce and chocolate chips, and if you like coffee with all its nutty, fruity, and floral notes, and if you also love the cappuccino color of brown sugar as well as the smell of natural coffee but can’t stand the thought and taste of ice cream; then this new product is unfortunately the very thing you will not like.

Oatly Ice Cream Coffee Chaos 500ml

A coffee-flavored ice cream with chunks of dark chocolate and chocolate sauce – need we say more?

Yes, we do. Otherwise, this segment looks a little too bare. The ice cream is of course plant-based, and the packaging is climate-friendly. This lasts 24 months in the freezer, but if you take it out, avoid freezing it again. (In research conducted with a very small and undoubtedly biased focus group, not a single person felt the need to refreeze this ice cream after they started eating it).

It's hard to say anything negative about this ice cream, (full disclosure: this writer was a part of that very small and undoubtedly biased focus group). But perhaps we should draw your attention to the fact that this is not that kind of "low-calorie-no-sugar-but-still-as-yummy" ice cream. (Though that last part “still-as-yummy” is true.)

  • How do you calculate the climate footprint of this product?

We gather data on greenhouse gas emissions from grower to grocer and put it through a platform called CarbonCloud that uses 20 years of research in the food-system field to crunch the numbers and get the final carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) number. When the counting and analyzing are done, an impartial verifier professional double-checks the calculations. Basically, our numbers are scrutinized by people who really know what they’re doing.
